In a large pot, lay down a few cabbage leaves at the bottom to prevent sticking.
Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the pot. Pour tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes over the rolls, adding a pinch of salt, sugar, and paprika to season. You can also add a little water to make more sauce if needed.
Cover the pot and let the rolls simmer on low heat for about 45-60 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through. The cabbage rolls should be tender and flavorful.
5. Pan-Fry the Cabbage Rolls (The Fryice Twist!):
After simmering, carefully remove the cabbage rolls from the pot and set them aside.
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
Once the oil is hot, carefully place a few cabbage rolls in the skillet (don’t overcrowd them) and fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
Remove from the pan and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
6. Serve:
Serve the crispy fried stuffed cabbage rolls with the remaining tomato sauce on the side, or drizzle some of the sauce over the top.
You can also garnish with fresh herbs, like parsley, if you like.
Additional Tips:
You can also add cooked bacon bits to the filling for extra flavor!
For a healthier version, you can skip the frying step and just bake the cabbage rolls in the oven for a crispy top.
The crispy texture from frying combined with the juicy and flavorful filling makes this dish a true comfort meal. Enjoy your Old-Fashioned Stuffed Cabbage Fryice!
