Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
8 oz mushrooms, sliced (cremini or white button mushrooms work well)
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried thyme (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)
2 tbsp butter (for greasing the casserole dish)
Instructions:
Preheat oven and prepare casserole dish:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish with butter or non-stick spray.
Cook the ground beef:
In a large skillet, heat a little bit of oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Once browned, drain any excess fat.
Sauté the vegetables:
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the beef, cooking for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for another 5 minutes, allowing them to soften and release their moisture.
Stir in Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat.
Prepare the casserole mixture:
In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, milk, and egg. Stir well to combine. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.
Add the beef and mushroom mixture to the bowl and mix everything together.
Assemble the casserole:
